HABIT LEARNING COMPANY · A PRACTICE FOR HUMAN FLOURISHING

Habits are spirals,
not lines.

A practice for human flourishing — built one tiny experiment at a time. Underneath the practice is a framework called ANIM: a 6-step cycle, a 4-layer Persistence Stack, and 5 intelligence domains. The framework is published, so you can use it. Click around. The architecture is the argument.

PART ONE — THE PERSISTENCE STACK

Habits live on four layers — and we work all four.

Behavioral mechanics — cue, routine, reward — is the floor of the practice, not the building. Habits that survive a hard week are rooted in social belonging, identity alignment, and narrative meaning above it. Click each layer to explore what HLC does at it.

PART TWO — THE SPIRAL CYCLE

Six steps. Same cycle. Each pass goes deeper.

The Hero's Journey ends. Habit maintenance does not. The ANIM cycle is explicitly spiral: same six steps, deeper meaning each pass. Pay attention to Step 4 → Step 5. The order is not arbitrary — it is load-bearing narrative architecture.

the cycle ANIM spiral, not loop 1 Self-Awareness 2 Solution Space 3 Engage & Practice 4 Celebrate Effort 5 Measure Result 6 Iterate load-bearing →

Step 4 must precede Step 5. Reverse the order and you train yourself to feel like a failure even when you succeed.

PART THREE — THE FIVE INTELLIGENCES

Five intelligences amplify every layer.

Each intelligence is a different access point to each layer of the stack. Cognitive smarts without Emotional, Cultural, Practical, and Collective intelligence is brittle. Hover the cells.

L4 Narrative
Sees the arc. Names the chapter.
Feels the story's truth.
Connects to collective story.
Tests the story in real situations.
Co-authors the shared narrative.
L3 Identity
Self-understanding as data.
Identity as felt self-concept.
Belonging across cultures.
Identity expressed in deeds.
Identity confirmed by group.
L2 Social
Reads group dynamics.
Tunes to others' states.
Navigates diverse contexts.
Skillful in real interaction.
Builds shared practice.
L1 Behavioral
Pattern-spots cue→routine→reward.
Feels the cue body-first.
Adapts routine to context.
Executes in the wild.
Practices alongside others.
SUMMARY — FIVE THINGS THAT MAKE HLC DIFFERENT

The argument in five sentences.

1

Capability is our currency.

Practice counts. Reflection counts more. Real-world transfer counts most. Weights are published.

2

Four layers, all worked.

Behavioral, social, identity, narrative — all four are what carry a habit through a hard week.

3

Effort precedes measurement.

Step 4 before Step 5 is load-bearing. McAdams' redemption sequence as architecture.

4

Spiral, not streak.

The cycle returns to Step 1 one level deeper. Modeled on liturgical, martial, and recovery traditions.

5

Five intelligences, each a real lever.

Cognitive smarts without emotional, cultural, practical, and collective intelligence is brittle.

FOR LEARNERS

Try one tiny experiment.

Pick a recent moment of stress. Write two sentences about what triggered it and what you wished you'd done. That's worth more than ten articles. Welcome to the practice.

FOR CO-PRACTITIONERS & PARTNERS

An open framework you can adopt or adapt.

Nine outcome dimensions. Five evidence-graded levels. Published signal weights. Use the framework inside the program you already run; embed our software where it makes the practice easier to run at scale. Co-practice, not vendor lock-in.

FOR RESEARCHERS

Bring a hypothesis. We'll bring the practitioners.

ANIM is falsifiable, with seven open questions and a longitudinal data infrastructure. Co-authorship, not ghostwriting. Real-world data, with proper consent and ethics review.
